The picturesque town of Sherman, incorporated in 1802, is found in the Housatonic Valley at the northern end of Candlewood Lake. It is a rustic community of 23 square miles with a population of over 3,500 residents. Sherman is at the northernmost town in Fairfield County, accessed by state highways 39, 37, and 55. Sherman has a wonderful elementary school for K-8 students. High school students can choose to attend one of four area high schools.
The city was named for Roger Sherman – a cobbler, land surveyor, attorney, and Statesman. In 1802, Sherman was formed out of the northern part of New Fairfield. Mr. Sherman was the only American to sign four founding documents of the United States: The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, The Continental Association of 1774, and The Federal Constitution.
Rated “Best Small Town in Connecticut” three times by Connecticut Magazine, Sherman boasts many open spaces and recreational installations, including grasslands, playfields, boat moorings, bathing coasts, ice skating, and hiking trails. The Appalachian Trail goes through the northern end of Sherman. The village also runs numerous recreational and artistic activities throughout the year, such as Sherman Farm Day and an old-fashioned Memorial Day Parade.
Today, Sherman is home to a new library, a new emergency services building, and a refurbished Senior Center. There are three well-maintained town grasslands for recreation. At Veterans Field, locals appreciate the ½ mile track, baseball and soccer fields, a basketball court, and state-of-the-art tennis courts. There is a soccer field, a residents’ garden, and hiking trails at Colonial Park. And Volunteer Park supplies further soccer and baseball fields.
