Stratford is a small town located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It is located on Long Island Sound right at the mouth of the Housatonic River and is part of Connecticut’s Gold Coast. Stratford was settled by the Puritans in 1639, and adopted the name Stratford in 1643, in honor of William Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon in England. As of 2020, the town has a population of 52,355, and proudly carries a historical legacy in arts, aviation, and the military.
The birthplace of one of the world’s first successful commercial helicopters in America was actually in the town of Stratford. When a Russian immigrant Igor Sikorsky developed the helicopter and it was flown at his plant. Almost 100 years later, the world’s leading helicopter company, Sikorsky Aircraft, continues to produce helicopters both for commercial and military use. The manufacturing facility is situated at the north side of Stratford.
