Monroe is a town situated in the eastern part of Fairfield County in Connecticut. In 1823, its incorporation was granted by the General Assembly, and named it after James Monroe, who was then the president. The total population of the town as of the 2020 US Census was 18,825. Agriculture was the first industry that developed in the town until the early 19th century. Soon after, it evolved into a transportation hub for residents and commuters going to Danbury, Bridgeport, and New York. It is currently regarded as the bedroom community of New York City, Stamford, New Haven, and Bridgeport.
The town of Monroe has remarkable parks and recreation. One of the most popular parks is Webb Mountain Park. It is a municipal park with a 135-acre area with hiking trails, picnic areas, swimming pools, soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and rock-climbing areas. The park also offers nature study and campsites. The aesthetic appeal of the place attracts the attention of the visitors. Nature lovers will definitely enjoy its diverse flora. Numerous trees, shrubs, flowering and non-flowering plants, ferns, and herbs. There are three trails available to the public which are ideal for hiking, biking, running, and more. Another park that’s worth a visit is the William E. Wolfe Park. It is a 300-acre town park that has a public pool, a man-made lake, a football field, four baseball fields, a basketball court, a couple of playgrounds, and a Wolfe Park Hiking trail that leads to Great Hollow Lake. If you are planning to go for a picnic, there is already a barbeque set up on the grass, and a pavilion within your reach. The place offers a relaxing ambiance and you can wander through the park’s woodlands or take your dog for a walk.
Once you visit Wolfe Park, make sure to include Great Hollow Lake in your itinerary. Located on the west side of Wolfe Park, it is a 16-acre lake with an approximately 210-meter beach and facilities on the north side. If you’re lucky to visit the lake in good weather, you can enjoy all sorts of water activities like swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Concession Pavilion is nearby if you need a bite.
