This makes it the fifth most populous city in New England. Bridgeport got its name from the town’s need for bridges over the Pequonnock River to provide a navigable port at the mouth of the river. The town lies at the mouth of the said river on Long Island Sound, 60 miles from Manhattan. It has a warm temperate climate, with long, hot summers and cool to cold winters.
The esteemed showman, P.T. Barnum, lived in Bridgeport for 40 years and served as the town’s mayor in the late 19th century. Today, the Barnum Museum at 820 Main Street in Bridgeport stands in honor of his legacy. The building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is filled with interesting artifacts, including a preserved elephant, a model of the “Feegee” mermaid, a miniature circus, and an authentic mummy. You may also visit his grave at the local Mountain Grove Cemetery, which Barnum himself designed.
Bridgeport was a major industrial center in Connecticut between the years of 1870 to 1910, with factories for sewing machines and an early automobile manufacturer. However, after World War II, many jobs were lost due to industrial restructuring and suburbanization, causing many wealthy residents to leave. This left Bridgeport struggling with poverty and violent crimes. Subsequently, the town began redevelopment of its downtown and other neighborhoods during the 21st century and has gone a long way to make the city more livable than it used to be. In March 1860, another historical moment unfolded in Bridgeport when Abraham Lincoln spoke in the city’s Washington Hall – an auditorium at the old Bridgeport City Hall. The room was packed, and a crowd formed outside. Later that year, Lincoln was elected president. Accounting to its vast plain lands, Bridgeport is also credited as the birthplace of the Frisbee.
Living in Bridgeport is like opening oneself to multiple lenses of historical revisiting, thanks to the Housatonic Museum of Art that houses significant pieces of collection from the 1700s to the 1900s. Established in 1967 by art professor and Director Emeritus Bert Chernow, this museum occupies a 33,000 square feet space, featuring a diverse amalgamation of international works and current student works from the Housatonic Community College. Downtown Cabaret Theatre also showcases a variety of interesting and entertaining productions, including famous favorites and some you may not be familiar with, and children’s shows with lots of retellings of your well-loved fairy tales.
