Who we are

A local deck company, not a national brand with a local number

Decks are where this company started, and they remain the bulk of what we do. Everything else we build — porches, patios, pool surrounds, shade — grew out of deck work, and it all runs on the same structural approach.

What that means in practice is that you are not dealing with a salesperson, a scheduler, and then a crew who have never met. The person who looks at your property is accountable for the job. Homeowners searching for local deck contractors are usually trying to find out exactly that, and it is a fair thing to want to know before you let anybody near your house.

We work one county. Staying inside Fairfield County means we know which building departments want what, where the soil turns to ledge, and which towns look hardest at lot coverage. It also means we can be standing in your yard this week rather than fitting you into a route through three states.

And we handle the whole range in-house. A deck company that only builds new decks has one answer to every question. We have eight, and the first part of the job is telling you which one applies.

That breadth is the practical difference between us and most firms offering deck construction services in this county. A specialist in new builds will find you a reason to build new. A specialist in resurfacing will find you a reason to resurface. We are not steering you toward the only thing we sell, because none of the eight is the only thing we sell.

Which job do you actually have?

This is the question that decides everything else, and it is worth sorting out before you collect quotes. Here is how the answers usually fall.

Sub-services

Everything we do with decks

Eight specialties, one crew. Each has its own page with the details.

Local deck builders busy installing a raised backyard deck behind a gray two-story house, with exposed pressure-treated framing, support posts, lumber stacks, and workers preparing the structure for decking installation.

Deck Design and Installation

New builds on open ground, drawn for the property rather than from a catalogue. We size the space around daily use instead of the occasional party, then set footings below frost, frame to span, and finish with guards and stairs that pass inspection first time.

Deck builders installing decking boards and railing posts on a raised backyard deck, with exposed wooden framing, power tools, lumber, and ladders surrounding the gray two-story house.

Deck Replacement & Rebuilds

When the existing structure has reached the end. We assess the frame before quoting, then take one of three routes — a new surface, a partial rebuild, or a full tear-off. Roughly half the decks we are called out to replace turn out not to need it.

Contractors repairing and replacing wooden deck boards on a large backyard deck, with workers securing new planks, tools, and construction materials spread across the existing deck and lawn.

Deck Repair & Restoration

For decks that are fundamentally sound. Targeted structural fixes, board and fastener replacement, loose guards made solid again. Also cleaning and refinishing, which is often all a tired-looking deck actually needs — and a fraction of the cost of anything bigger.

Contractors installing wood decking on a raised platform behind a gray-sided house, using power tools and cutting stations while working on the deck surface and preparing additional boards.

Wood Deck Installation

Natural timber surfaces, with the warmth and the grain that no engineered board quite matches. Cedar, pressure-treated softwood and tropical hardwoods, each with its own finishing schedule. For owners who want the look and will keep up with it.

Deck contractors installing gray composite decking on a large backyard deck, with exposed wooden framing, unfinished steps, upright railing posts, and construction tools scattered across the lawn.

Composite Deck Installation

Engineered boards that hold their color and need no annual sealing. Capped and PVC systems, laid with hidden fasteners over a properly taped frame. Higher up front than timber, then almost nothing for the next twenty years.

Local Fairfield contractors installing wooden deck railings on an elevated backyard deck, measuring and securing posts above newly laid decking boards behind a gray-sided home.

Deck Railing

The part the inspector looks at hardest, and the part that fails first on an older structure. Cable, glass, aluminum and timber systems, built to the height and spacing the code requires rather than the height that looked right.

Contractors constructing a multi-level backyard deck behind a cedar-shingle house, with elevated platforms, wooden framing, partially completed stairs, and lumber cutting stations throughout the yard.

Multi-Level Decks

Where the ground drops away, two or three levels following the grade is usually cheaper and better than one tall platform. Shorter posts, less guard, and a set of landings that actually arrive somewhere useful on the way down.

Contractors building a custom curved composite deck behind a gray shingle-style home, with workers installing decking boards over exposed framing and cutting lumber for the multi-level design.

Custom Deck

Angles, curves, inset borders, picture-frame edges, built-in seating and integrated lighting. For properties where nothing standard fits, or where the shape of the yard decides the shape of the build. Drawn for the site, every time.

If none of those quite fits, that is normal. Call and describe it — the answer takes about a minute on the phone.

Our standards

What stays the same across all eight

Whichever job you need, the same things are true. These are the standards, not the sales pitch.

We get under it before we quote

No number leaves our hands without somebody having looked at the footings, the framing, and the ledger. That is how we know which of the eight jobs you have.

Frame before finish

Footings below the local frost line. A ledger bolted through to solid framing and flashed properly. Joists at a span the material is rated for. Guards at the height code requires. None of it is visible when the job is done, and all of it decides whether you are still happy in ten years.

Our own crew

No subcontracted framing, no handover halfway through. Deck building contractor and deck builder are the same people here.

Hardware specified for the location

Stainless near Long Island Sound, where salt air finds ordinary galvanized hardware within a few seasons. Standard structural hardware inland, where it is not needed and would be a waste of your money.

Written, itemized scope

Materials, dimensions and what each part covers, with any contingency stated openly rather than discovered later.

Permits handled

A deck is structural work and in every Fairfield County town that means a permit and inspections. We tell you what applies and handle the application and drawings.

What to ask

What to ask any deck company before you hire one

Gray and cedar-shingle house with an elevated wraparound-style deck, black metal railings, wide illuminated stairs, outdoor lounge seating, a fire table, and landscaped flower beds.

Six questions. They take two minutes, and they separate the companies who build decks from the companies who sell them.

“Who does the framing?”

f the answer is a subcontractor, ask who inspects their work. Plenty of outfits selling deck construction services broker the structural part and keep the finish carpentry, which is the wrong way round — the finish is the easy bit.

“How deep do the footings go?”

The only acceptable answer in Connecticut is below the local frost line. If somebody is vague about it, they are vague about the thing that decides whether your deck stays level.

“How does it attach to the house, and does it get flashed?”

Ledger failure is behind most deck collapses. A company that answers this in detail has built a lot of decks. One that treats it as a formality has not.

“What hardware are you specifying, and why?”

Near the shoreline the answer should be stainless. Inland it should not be, because you would be paying for something you do not need. Either answer is fine; “whatever we normally use” is not.

“Will you tell me if I need less than I asked for?”

The most useful question on the list. Ask it directly and listen to how quickly the answer comes.

“Are you licensed and insured, and can I see it?”

Any experienced deck contractor expects to be asked. Certifications and manufacturer programmes are worth asking about too — several decking manufacturers run installer training, and it is reasonable to ask whether a company holds any.

We are happy to answer all six on the phone before you book anything.

Connecticut

What this climate does to a deck

Two-story off white house with a spacious composite deck, black metal railings, built-in step lighting, an outdoor sectional sofa, a fire table, and a covered dining area beneath a modern black pergola.

Five conditions, and between them they decide how long a deck lasts here.

Freeze-thaw

Roughly six months of cycling every year finds anything that traps water. It is the biggest ageing factor on a deck here by a distance.

Frost heave

Footings above the frost line lift every winter, the deck goes out of level, and connections work loose.

Salt air

Along Long Island Sound — Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, Bridgeport — hardware corrodes far faster than inland.

Ledge and grade

Shallow bedrock is common in Redding, Newtown, Sherman and New Fairfield, and it can move a footing location or change how it is formed.

Age of the housing stock

A great deal of this county's decking went in during the eighties and nineties, which puts much of it at exactly the age where the frame reaches the end.

Freeze-thaw

Roughly six months of cycling every year finds anything that traps water. It is the biggest ageing factor on a deck here by a distance.

Cost

What deck building services cost, and what moves the number

We do not publish a square-foot price, because the eight jobs above span an enormous range and a single figure would mislead most people reading it.

What is worth knowing is which factors matter most, because they are the same across every job on this page.

Which job you actually have

The biggest variable before anything else is considered. A new surface over a sound frame and a full rebuild are not adjacent numbers.

Height off grade

Posts, footings, stairs and guards all scale with it. This drives more cost than square footage does.

Site conditions

Soil, ledge, access, and whether a machine can reach the work area.

Surface material

A wide spread, and the one lever you can pull without redesigning anything.

Guards and stairs

Consistently underestimated. Linear feet of guard and the number of stair runs both matter more than people expect.

Permits and inspections

Fees vary by town, and we put them in the scope rather than adding them later.

Whether it is one job or several

Deck construction near me is often how a whole-backyard project starts. If the deck is one piece of something larger, pricing it together is usually cheaper than pricing it twice.

You get an itemized estimate after we walk the property. The visit is free with no obligation attached, and it includes telling you which of the eight jobs you need — including the cheap one, if that is the honest answer.

Process

How it works, whichever job you need

1. Free on-site visit

We look at the property, get under any existing structure, and work out which job applies.

2. Written, itemized proposal

Scope, materials and dimensions, with contingencies stated.

3. Permits

Drawings to the town, plus wetlands or historic review where it applies.

4. The work

One crew, one point of contact, and you hear about a schedule change from us rather than noticing nobody turned up.

5. Inspection and walkthrough

The town signs off, we walk it with you, and the punch list gets handled.

Why us

Why homeowners here hire us

Local deck building crew finishing up after a new wood deck installation project has been completed in the area.

Homeowners comparing local deck builders usually end up weighing the same three things: whether the company knows their town, whether the same people do the work, and whether anybody will tell them the truth about what they actually need. Those are the three we compete on.

Eight specialties, one company

You are not told you need the one thing a contractor happens to sell.

One crew, start to finish

The person who quotes it is accountable for it.

All 23 towns

Which means we know the building departments and the ground.

We assess before we quote

And we will tell you when the cheap answer is the right one.

Decks, porches, patios, pool decks and shade in-house

Most backyard projects touch more than one, and the transitions get designed rather than argued about.

Service area

Where we work

A deck company covering all 23 towns in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Some towns keep us busier than others. We handle deck building services in Westport and along the shoreline through most of the season, and plenty of deck building Ridgefield and Brookfield homeowners ask about in the northern half of the county — but the crew and the standard are identical everywhere. What changes is the hardware specification, the ground, and which permit desk the drawings go to.

Searches for local deck contractors and deck companies near me turn up firms covering half of New England. Plenty of decking contractors list every town within a hundred miles and then schedule you around a route. We cover one county, and that is the whole point.

Homeowners looking for local deck builders in the northern towns sometimes assume a shoreline-based company will not travel. Decking contractors who genuinely work the whole county do, and we are in Sherman, New Fairfield and Brookfield most weeks of the season.

FAQ

Common questions

I don't know which service I need. Where do I start?

With the free visit. Working out which of the eight jobs you have is the first part of what we do, and it is not something you can settle from photographs. Bring the symptom — soft boards, movement, or just wanting something bigger — and we will tell you what it points to.

No. New builds are one of eight things we do. A good share of our work is on decks somebody else built, and a good share of that turns out to need less than the owner expected.

A deck company. Decks are the core of the business and everything else we build grew out of them. We are not a general contractor who also does decks.

Nothing, in practice — different companies use different words for the same thing. What actually varies between firms is whether the structural work is done in-house, whether anybody assesses the site before quoting, and whether the permit is handled for you. Those three questions are worth more than the wording on a website.

Ask who does the framing and whether it is subcontracted. Ask where the footings go and how deep. Ask how the deck attaches to the house and whether it gets flashed. Ask to see completed work rather than renderings. And ask whether they will tell you if you do not need the job you called about.

Yes. A deck is structural work and every Fairfield County town requires a permit and inspections. We tell you what applies to your property and handle the application and drawings.

It depends on the season — spring and early summer are busiest. We give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic one.

Yes, alongside residential, across the county.

Yes. Porches, patios, pool surrounds and shade structures are all in-house. If the deck is one piece of a larger plan, it can be priced and scheduled as one project.

Earlier than most people expect. The build calendar fills for the warm months and permitting takes time on the front end, so late winter or early spring is the right point to start the conversation.
