Ludlow Deck Builders is a deck building company serving Fairfield County, Connecticut. We also trade as Fairfield County Deck Builders — same company, same crew, same phone number. The second name is simply what most homeowners here search for.
Decks are where we started, and they remain the core of the business: new installation, repair and restoration, renovation, design and cleaning, for both residential and commercial properties. Everything else we do grew out of that work. Porches, patios and hardscapes, pool decks and pergolas are all variations on the same problem — building a structure outdoors, in this climate, that has to last.
We work one county rather than a wide territory, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation.
Site conditions here change more than the county’s size suggests. Along Long Island Sound, the water table sits high, and salt is in the air, so hardware that would last decades inland corrodes early. In the northern towns, you hit shallow ledge, steeper grades, and heavier soils. A build detail that is correct in Fairfield is not automatically correct in Sherman.
Permitting differs too. Every town runs its own building department with its own thresholds, its own view on retaining wall heights and pool barriers, and its own timelines. Knowing a permit desk before you walk into it saves weeks, and that is knowledge you only get from working somewhere repeatedly.
How we work
Most of what goes wrong on outdoor construction is invisible on the day the job finishes.
A deck that bounces has a joist span problem. A patio that sinks in year two had its base compacted in one thick layer instead of several thin ones. A porch that leaks at the roofline was flashed badly at the tie-in. A retaining wall that leans has water behind it and nowhere to go. In every case, the homeowner was looking at the finish — the boards, the stone, the railing — while the decision that mattered was made a week earlier and then buried.
That is the part of the job we care most about, and it is what we talk about at the estimate. Footings below the frost line. Ledgers flashed properly. Joist tape where water sits. Bases compacted in lifts. Stainless hardware where salt is in the picture. Drainage that runs away from the house rather than toward it.
It is not the exciting part of the conversation. It is the part that decides whether you are still happy in ten years.
We do not hand the framing to one sub, the roofing to another, and the finish carpentry to a third. Decks, porches, patios, walls, and pool decks are all in-house, so when a project involves more than one of them — and most backyard projects do — the transitions get designed rather than argued about.
If your existing deck frame is sound, we will say so and quote a re-deck rather than a rebuild. If a covered porch will darken the room behind it, you should hear that before you sign anything. If your town will not allow the patio depth you want, that should come from us at the estimate rather than from the building department later.
We will assist with permit applications and drawing plans, plus coordination when wetlands or historic district review applies. We assist with the permit process on every project that needs one and are here to answer questions about what you need to do with the paperwork.
Our team
Our crew is built around complementary skills, not a single trade. Framing, finish carpentry, hardscape, and site work are different disciplines, and a backyard project that includes a deck stepping down to a patio needs all of them working to the same plan.
That is the practical reason we keep the work in-house. When one company owns the framing, the surface, the drainage, and the transitions, nobody is standing in your yard explaining that a problem belongs to somebody else’s scope.
The person who comes out to look at your property is the person accountable for the job. You will not be handed to a salesperson who then disappears once the contract is signed.

This is the part of a hardscape estimate homeowners cannot see and therefore cannot compare. Here is what a properly built patio involves.

What we build
Six service areas, one crew. Most projects touch more than one of them.
New deck design and installation for residential and commercial properties, plus repair, restoration, and renovation of existing decks. Composite and Trex decking, PVC, cedar, and pressure-treated wood. Multi-level decks, custom layouts, deck lighting, railings, stairs, and built-in seating. We also offer deck cleaning.
Front porches and porticos, covered porches, screened-in porches, sunrooms and three-season rooms, and porch repair. Roof framing and tie-ins, tongue-and-groove flooring, columns and finish carpentry.
Paver patios, natural stone and Connecticut bluestone, retaining walls, seating walls, walkways, steps and fire pit areas. Excavation, base construction, and drainage, as well as the surface you see.
Decks around in-ground and above-ground pools — code-compliant barriers and gate hardware, slip-resistant surfaces, and framing detailed for constant wet. Custom pool shapes and sizes are no issue; we can handle those too.
Create shade over your outdoor living space with our shade sails and structures. Add pergolas over a patio or the lounging end of a pool deck, freestanding gazebos, carports, and more with our plans.
Whole-backyard projects where the deck, patio, porch, and pool surround must work as one space. We handle the zoning and layout, the elevations and transitions between elements, and the build order — including phasing a project across two or three seasons where that suits the budget.

No. The consultation and the written estimate are free, and there is no obligation attached to either.
We build year-round, though footing work is harder in deep winter and spring is the wettest season for excavation. Because permitting takes time and the calendar fills for summer, late winter or early spring is sensible for anything you want to use that season.
